a linen suit may be too informal for this type of event. a black suit with a light shirt/tie combo would be a little more appropriate.
however, if your going to buy a suit anyway, i would recommend a seersucker suit. they’re really in now and would be the best option. i recommend a white/gray suit, so that you can match any color shirt and tie with it. shoe-wise, tan or white should would go well with the suit

I would recommend a cotton/linen suit, the last thing you want to do is sweat like a dog while eating… Wool or polyester materials are the most common suits, but for summer, cotton/linen are the best mix to keep air flow…
Please do not wear a white suit, the wedding day is to put the bride in the spot light with the white gown, a pin stripe black or dark gray suit will keep you comfy

I think something lightweight would be good – the seersucker is a great suggestion. Linen would also be nice, maybe a navy linen, but make sure the linen is nice and crisp. I think the black formal suit might be too dark and heavy.
Do you know anyone else who’s going to the reception? Maybe you can put your heads together and see what you all think. I went online and found pictures of fancy fundraisers that took place in gardens and some people had seersucker/bow tie ensembles, and others had tuxes on. So maybe both are correct!
