I think you’re talking about “Green Card” co-starring Gerard Depardieu. It was out in 1990. I loved that movie. She let him stay with her and married him so he could get a green card. In exchange she could stay in this apartment with a garden, which meant a lot because plants were her passion. They fell in love at the end. I love this movie! Trailer for the movie is linked below.
